Swedenborgian Seminar with Dr. Rebecca Esterson
*attendance available in-person or virtually*
This seminar explores the eighteenth century Scandinavian scientist-turned-mystic Emanuel Swedenborg, with a particular focus on Swedenborg’s ideas of apocalypse. It will be co-led by Drs. Devin Zuber and Rebecca Esterson, with a number of guest speakers. Topically oriented, the class tracks several strands of Swedenborgian thought and their relation to apocalyptic genres, including (but not limited to): the history of biblical interpretation; mystical experiences; studies of death and after-death; art and aesthetics; environmentalism and eco-theologies; religious pluralism and the history of the study of comparative religions. Other readings will be drawn from more contemporary philosophy and theologians who have dealt with apocalypse, such as Catherine Keller.
